Summer Camp
Walton Firs Scout Camp 31 July - 7 August 2010

Saturday 7th August

The end of another camp! We spent the morning taking down tents, and loading the lorry ready to go home. Unfortunately, it started to rain again just before we got the last of the tents down. Nevertheless, we closed the camp with a prize giving ceremony where the Cubs’ Moles Six and the Explorers’ Weasels Patrol were each awarded prizes as the winners. Also, everyone got a certificate, mug and badge from Walton Firs for attending.

Also, as it was their first camp, we awarded King Louie and Raksha a chopping board and rolling pin signed by all the attendees.

Thanks to all the kids for making this a great camp! See you all next year.

Friday 6th August

This morning we had a full kit inspection – Toby was ready two and a half hours earlier than everyone else! After breakfast we did a Camp Good Turn, when we had to pull up brambles and saplings from the heath land. They were then replanted around the new caving system.

After lunch, the Cubs went caving in the new caving system. This was really cool, with lots of stuff to find like fossils and a dinosaur skull. Everybody had a really good time - It was so good, even Bagheera went in! After the Cubs had finished, the Scouts and Explorers went in with Techno.

For dinner tonight, we had a BBQ cooked by King Louie. We had sausages in rolls and burgers in buns, with salad. We cooked marshmallows over the fire and squished them between chocolate biscuits for pudding – Yum!

This evening we had a campfire sing-a-long with Skip. We sat by the fire in our camp blankets and sang songs, some of them with actions.

As part of their moving up transition, the ‘Scubs’ (Cubs who are becoming Scouts) have moved into the Scout tents for tonight and will help cook breakfast with the Scout patrols tomorrow morning.

We are all looking forward to seeing you tomorrow – remember that if you want to see the closing awards ceremony, please be here before 3pm.

Thursday 5th August

This morning we all played Frisbee golf which was a new game for many of us. You have to throw your Frisbee at each flag and count how many throws it takes to hit it. We enjoyed it lots.

This afternoon, we made our dinner ready to be cooked on the open fire. We put meat, vegetables and gravy into foil pouches, then folded them up to seal them. It was a bit of a disaster because the fire was too hot so most of them burned! We had chips instead. Pudding was marshmallows roasted over the fire, then squished between two chocolate biscuits. Yummy!

The Scouts had a cooking competition; here are some thoughts from the Scouts:

Shrews: We went to Sainsbury’s to buy ingredients for our dinner. Our budget was £10 and thanks to Becky we spent £6.44. We cooked crudités with a cheese and chive dip, macaroni and cheese with broccoli and chocolate brownie with chocolate sauce; it was lovely!

Josh and Becky, Shrews Patrol.

Squirrels: We spent £8.57 on or ingredients. We made pork belly roasted in apple juice with mashed potato and carrots, followed by crushed Bourbon biscuits with spray cream, caramelised sugar and orange slices. Unfortunately, Ben melted the pot while trying to caramelise the sugar, so pudding didn’t turn out quite as we expected, but the pork was lovely.

Wednesday 4th August

This morning we played football with a huge beach ball, then some of us had a water fight with Skip over by the ravine. Skip had the biggest gun and we all got really wet.

After lunch, King Louie talked to us about his job in the Metropolitan Police, which we needed as part of our Community Challenge badge. During this we had a big thunder storm, but we were all ok under the big marquee tent in the dry.

The adventure course this afternoon was great but really muddy because it was just after the thunder storm! It was really slippery and most of us got wet and muddy. Emily J’s favourite part was the rope swing over a muddy puddle! Emily B’s favourite was the tunnel.

This evening after dinner, we all played Skittles and Skip won the knockout contest. We think it was a fix because he was scoring too!

We had pancakes for breakfast, noodles for lunch and corned beef for dinner.

Tuesday 3rd August

This morning, the Scouts did crate stacking, which was scary but fun. Skip’s team won through a strategy of smaller feet! Rhys and Matthew J got the highest with a tower 15 crates high. After the team games, we had an individual challenge, where Molly beat Ben by one crate!

After lunch we played rounders while the Cubs did archery. Matt H’s team won 45 – 35 after 4 or 5 rounds.

Then the Scouts did archery where we all had three attempts with 3 arrows each. Matt J managed to hit the target once from his 9 arrows, and Ben hit the target with all 9! Rob the instructor was crazy!

Message from Techno: Tomorrow we are expecting thundery showers throughout the day. Don’t worry – we will be fine, and please don’t be concerned if we aren’t able to update the web site until Thursday morning.

Monday 2nd August

Full kit inspection this morning which means we had to get all our kit onto our beds, tidy the tent and were inspected by Skip and Techno. Ruby made a mess on her bed and she and Rosie had to tidy it up really quickly before inspection.

For lunch we cooked sausages on an open fire. This wasn’t so good because the smoke kept going in our eyes. We ended up with King Louie finishing them off in a frying pan.

This afternoon, the Explorers, Scouts and some of the older cubs went rifle shooting which was really fun. Rosie came second in the competition, behind ‘Sharp Shooting’ Rev. Robin, with Rhys and Molly joint third.

Climbing was tricky but really good fun. The instructor gave lots of us nicknames; Emily P-B was ‘The Witch’ because she cackled when someone fell off; Gino was ‘Guinea’ (as in guinea-pig – he was first); Luke was ‘Skywalker’ (can’t think why!); Becky was ‘Spider-girl’, Matt H was ‘SOS’ (Sibling of Spider-girl); and Andrew was ‘Sideshow Bob’ because of his hair!

Sunday 1st August

This morning we did orienteering. It was really fun because we got to go all round the camp site.

After lunch we made camp gadgets; shoe racks, rubbish sack holders, and the Badgers even made a game.

This evening, we went round the yellow submarine maze. This was fun because there were loads of obstacles.
